03 / FORMULA AND LIMITS

One target. One clear comparison.

The target is the 100% reference point. Direction changes which side of the target counts as better.

01

Direction-adjusted score

100 + 100 × direction × (actual − target) ÷ |target|

Direction is +1 for higher-is-better and −1 for lower-is-better. The score equals 100% at target.

02

Plain Method default statuses

On track: 100% or more. Needs attention: 80% to below 100%. Off track: below 80%. Scores are not capped and may be negative.

03

Simple overall mean

The overall score is the arithmetic mean of all KPI scores. Every row must be valid; no weights, time periods or benchmarks are applied.

This is a one-time comparison, not a BI dashboard, performance-management system or industry-standard benchmark. A zero target has no percentage scale and must be changed. KPI values are not saved; reloading restores the synthetic example.

FAQ

Questions before you use it.

How is target-to-actual attainment calculated?
The target is 100%. The score is 100 + 100 × direction factor × (actual − target) ÷ |target|. The direction factor is +1 for higher-is-better and −1 for lower-is-better. This is a simple direction-adjusted index, not an industry standard.
Why can’t a target be zero?
A percentage needs a non-zero target as its comparison scale. A zero target is flagged instead of being divided by zero. An actual value of zero is valid when the target is non-zero.
Can I use negative KPI values?
Yes. Negative targets and actuals are compared using the absolute target as the scale, while the selected direction still determines which change is favorable.
How are statuses and the overall score set?
Plain Method defaults are On track at 100% or more, Needs attention from 80% to below 100%, and Off track below 80%. The overall score is the unweighted arithmetic mean of all valid KPI scores and appears only when every row is valid.
Are my KPI values uploaded or saved?
Calculations run in this browser. The two allowlisted analytics events contain only an event type, fixed tool key and canonical route; they never include KPI names, targets, actuals or scores. Reloading restores the synthetic example.
When should I use the Operations Review & KPI OS workbook?
This free scorecard is for a one-off target-versus-actual check. The separate paid workbook supports a recurring weekly or monthly review, multiple periods, historical comparisons, explanations and follow-up actions.
Is this a KPI dashboard?
It is a small KPI target-versus-actual scorecard, not a BI dashboard with charts, data connections, collaboration or historical reporting. Use it for one focused check; use a recurring review workflow when you need multiple periods and follow-up actions.
